Recommended Books for Expecting Parents

A list of books I would recommend for a parent who is expecting:

For Infants

Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child

Dr. Marc Weissbluth

The leading authority on sleep habits in children. A must read before your child is born.

Wonder Weeks

Hetty van de Rijt Ph.D. and Frans Plooij Ph.D.

This book is a gemstone for anyone learning about the timetable of a child’s cognitive development. The leaps start as early as 5 weeks. I recommend the app too!!

The Blossom Method

Vivien Sabel

A short book on the hunger signs of a child 0 – 3 months old.

Baby Led Weaning

Gil Rapley and Tracey Murkett

Skip jar food! A guide to introducing whole solid foods from the start.

Your Self-Confident Baby: How to Encourage Your Child’s Natural Abilities — From the Very Start

Magda Gerber and Allison Johnson

This book provides a general philosophy on raising infants where the child is respected and given plenty of freedom to grow at their own pace.

The latest medical advice on raising an infant

The advice for raising an infant gets better continuously. I recommend finding a mainstream, well-reviewed book written by one or several pediatricians outlining the most recent information. I read Baby 411, but I recommend looking for the latest at the time that you are pregnant.

The Observant Mom: Infants

Amber Domoradzki

My book! I condense what can be found in the previous books, and more, into a book that is 100 pages. I present a philosophy of respecting, observing, and understanding your baby. The first chapter “All Things Baby,” which goes over the major elements of feeding a baby, sleeping, and more, is offered for free as a  PDF. Follow me on facebook too.

For Toddlers

Note: The Montessori Method and Between Parent and Child make my list for the top 2 parenting book ever. Read them before getting pregnant and again as your child turns 2.

The Montessori Method

Dr. Maria Montessori

This explains an approach to teaching young children. Children are given freedom to choose what lesson to work on. The materials are on shelves for children to pick from. Children are given demonstrations of how to use and care for the materials. The materials are designed to teach children in a conceptual way, by isolating the concept being taught.

Between Parent and Child

Dr. Ginott

This is a classic and will make you a better person and parent. Learn how to speak to your child in a way that they understand, that respects them, and validates their feelings.

Positive Discipline books

There are many positive discipline books on different topics. There is one for infants and toddlers. At about 15 months, children start to test adults. I would recommend this book for effective discipline.
